How we help dogs in need

Dogs come into our care for all kinds of reasons, each with a different personality and requirements. We get to know every dog in our care and give them the tailored support they need. Each of our rehoming centres has specialist facilities to give dogs the best possible care. 

Our training and behaviour experts assess every dog and develop a bespoke plan of enrichment, care and training. For dogs who need extra support, we go the extra mile to help build their confidence and skills. That could be through introducing them to new activities, as we did for Stuart the Dobermann cross. Or building up confidence around unfamiliar people, like our amazing canine carers did with Jasper the Labrador Collie cross. 

Our dedicated veterinary teams ensure all dogs receive regular health checks and treatment. Many of our centres have dedicated vet suites, and some even have hydrotherapy tanks, run by qualified hydrotherapists. Some dogs will need additional vet care, perhaps to have a health condition investigated or monitored. Like Eli the Lurcher, who was found tied to a gate and needed urgent treatment when he came to us.

The average stay for a dog in one of our rehoming centres is just 47 days, but some dogs need more care and attention before they are ready to find their forever home. Those dogs will stay loved in our care for as long as they need us.

Some dogs who stay with us a long time become our Sponsor Dogs. You can sign up to support them and follow their progress.

Our work doesn’t end the day a dog leaves our care. We promise to support adopters for the rest of their dog’s life. Through our Post Adoption Support service we offer expert behaviour and training advice to help families and their four-legged friends overcome any issues they face. And if there’s no other solution and it’s best for everyone, we’ll always take a dog back into our care.

In some cases, our staff spot potential in our pooches for a future as a working dog. We’ve rehomed around 70 dogs to police forces across the UK, where they’ve thrived as service dogs. Read more about the achievements of our rescue dogs in the field.
