Shock collars

We’re calling for shock collars to be banned.

A large grey Great Dane with a red collar and open mouth is panting joyfully outdoors against a backdrop of blurred green foliage.

What’s the issue?

No dog should be trained through pain or fear.

Electronic shock collars are training aids designed to ‘correct’ unwanted behaviour by giving dogs electric shocks via their neck.

We never condone using pain or fear to train a dog. Our centres only use reward-based methods of training with the dogs in our care.

Shocks can reach 6,000 volts for up to 11 seconds

What we’re doing to ban shock collars

We’re calling for shock collars to be banned.

We’ve been campaigning to ban them for years. Whether that’s been independently as Dogs Trust, or collectively with other dog welfare organisations. We regularly speak with politicians to explain why we believe all cruel training aids should be banned.

We were delighted when, in 2010, the Welsh Government banned the use of shock collars in Wales. But since only the UK Government can ban the sale of these items, they’re still easy to get hold of across the country. We want the UK Government to ban the sale of these devices so no more dogs have to suffer.
