Microchipping
We’re calling for a simpler microchipping system for owners.

What's the issue?
We’ve been campaigning on the issue of microchipping for decades. So, we were delighted when the UK Government introduced mandatory microchipping for dogs in 2013. This helped increase the number of lost dogs brought back to safety with their owners. However, numbers of lost and stray dogs are still too high. And this is largely due to outdated information found on the microchip.
A microchip on its own is meaningless, and we know it can often be complicated for a pet owner to know where to go to update their microchip records. Currently, they have to go through their database organisation, and update their details there. This can be difficult if they’re unaware of which database operator they originally signed up with.
So, we’re calling for the introduction of a single point of search for all Government -approved databases. This would make it easier for pet owners to update their details, and reunite more dogs safely with their beloved humans.
What we're doing to improve microchipping
We’re calling for a simpler microchipping system.
There are currently 15 Defra-approved databases. But there are many more rogue ones that aren’t approved and should be avoided. We regularly meet with key stakeholders across the UK to discuss how best to implement a single point of access to all microchip database records. Our aim is for all dogs to be easily traceable.
