Pet-friendly housing

We’re calling for more pet-friendly housing.

What’s the issue?

All dogs and their owners should have a place to call home. Whether it’s temporary or emergency accommodation, or permanent housing in the private or social rented sectors. We’ve long called for an end to blanket “no pets” policies. But many pet owners still struggle to find housing.

We get thousands of handover calls from UK dog owners who are struggling with the lack of pet-friendly housing.

What we’re doing to improve pet‑friendly housing

We’re calling for more pet-friendly housing and rights for owners.

We’ve long campaigned for better protections for dog owning tenants in the UK. In 2025, we celebrated two major milestones. These included the passing of:

  • the Renters’ Rights Act 2025
  • the Housing (Scotland) Act 2025.

Each of these introduced measures that allow people in England and Scotland to enjoy the benefits of dog ownership while renting.

It’s a huge step forward, but we’re not stopping there. We want pet owners across the whole UK to have the same housing options as non-pet owners. No matter which housing sector.

How we’re supporting renters and landlords

We’re here to support renters and landlords with practical guidance that helps everyone feel confident about welcoming dogs into rental homes.

How our supporters have helped

Nearly 20,000 of you helped us call on the government to improve pet-friendly housing in the social sector. As a result, they promised to support and encourage all social housing providers and local councils to introduce pet-friendly policies.

And over 2,000 of you wrote to your MSP calling for improvements to the Housing (Scotland) Act 2025. Your voices helped secure a huge win for dogs and their owners. Private landlords must now respond to pet requests within 30 days – down from 42 days. And they can no longer unreasonably refuse the request.
