Puppy smuggling

We want to end the cruel puppy smuggling trade.

What’s the issue?

In 2012, the Pet Travel Scheme was created to make it easy for owners to take their pets on holiday with them. But since then, dishonest traders have abused the scheme’s simple set-up. They’ve repeatedly used it to import thousands of puppies to sell for huge profits, all at the cost of welfare.

The result? Puppies – often too young, unvaccinated and in poor welfare – being transported to the UK in terrible conditions. All to be sold on to unsuspecting buyers.

We first exposed this cruel puppy smuggling trade in 2014, and we’ve been pushing for law changes to help stop it ever since.

What we’re doing to end puppy smuggling

We want to end the cruel puppy smuggling trade.

Having been campaigning on this issue for over a decade, we’ve provided overwhelming evidence of the continued and growing scale of the trade. Each one of our five investigations have exposed the shocking lengths smugglers will go to to avoid detection.

Our Puppy Pilot scheme

In 2015, we set up our Puppy Pilot. This scheme helps APHA (Animal and Plant Health Agency) to seize more illegally imported puppies at ports. It then provides care and rehab for them while they wait for a loving home.

Since 2015, we have cared for over 3,200 illegally imported puppies through our Puppy Pilot scheme. The cruel puppy smuggling trade cannot be allowed to continue any longer. We’ll continue to campaign on this issue until the day that no dogs have to suffer at the hands of these illegal importers.
