Veterinary team

Our vet team are our go-to experts for everything about dog health. Their role at Dogs Trust is to provide specialist veterinary advice and guidance to teams across the organisation.

All the advice on our website has been approved by our experts, so you know it’s information you can trust.

Our team, officially called Clinical Veterinary Support, is made up of vets, vet nurses and admin staff. All our vets are Members of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (MRCVS). And all our nurses are Registered Veterinary Nurses (RVN) with RCVS-accredited qualifications.

Our vets and vet nurses have a range of expertise and qualifications between them. The team have experience working with animals in a range of places including other charities, shelters, private vet practices and specialist veterinary hospitals. Our vets have seen and experienced most things that working in the veterinary world can throw at you: from sick snakes to coughing cows! But they all share a common passion for improving the welfare of all dogs, all over the world.

What our veterinary experts do

As well as creating and reviewing expert advice, our vets work with teams across the organisation to ensure dog health and welfare is at the forefront of everything we do. A typical day could include:

  • Supporting the veterinary teams at our rehoming centres, giving advice to the centre staff on tricky medical cases
  • Writing and reviewing protocols for how we care for dogs, as well as ensuring patient safety at the rehoming centres
  • Helping manage and prevent disease spread
  • Running our veterinary support schemes, including our busy Dogs Trust pharmacy
  • Creating and reviewing advice to be shared via our social media, magazines, emails, through our partners, and more.
  • Working alongside our public affairs team to campaign for change and a better world for dogs
  • Supporting our Outreach programmes, Together Through Homelessness and Freedom, and their clients
  • Providing expert guidance for film and photo shoots, to ensure dog welfare is always the top priority
  • Delivering training to Dogs Trust staff and external organisations
  • Representing Dogs Trust outside of the organisation, for example as part of the Brachycephalic Working Group
  • Working with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons Practice Standards Scheme (a voluntary scheme to promote and maintain high standards of veterinary care)
  • Developing new guidance to improve veterinary processes and overall welfare of dogs in our care.

As well as our Clinical Veterinary Support team, we have dedicated vet staff in all our rehoming centres who give daily care to our dogs. Plus a team of qualified vet professionals who run our Dog Friendly Clinics programme.
